VANCOUVER - Kadeisha Buchanan impressed in her last outing for Canada and she will likely get another chance when the womens national team takes the field next week. The 18-year-old from Toronto was named to Canadas roster for a friendly on June 18 against Germany after the defender scored her first goal for her country in last months 1-1 draw with the United States in Winnipeg. There are only a handful of changes to the Canadian squad that suited up that night as veteran defenders Emily Zurrer and Marie-Eve Nault make their return along with forward Christina Julien. The game in Vancouver against Germany is part of Canadas preparations as the host country for next years womens World Cup. "If you want to win a World Cup at home, youre going to have to beat these teams. Youre going to find them on your road to the finals somewhere," Canadian head coach John Herdman said in a release. "The more we can learn about those teams and learn about ourselves with those teams, its only going to put us in better stead." Germany, which is ranked second in the world behind the U.S., beat Canada 1-0 last year in another friendly. "When we played them in Germany we had an experimental squad with a different way of playing," said Herdman, whose team is ranked seventh. "We were developing and this year were trying to improve and to get closer to where its going to look like when were in a World Cup." The Canadian roster that will try to beat the Germans for the first time also includes: goalkeepers Karina LeBlanc and Erin McLeod; defenders Robyn Gayle, Carmelina Moscato, Rebecca Quinn, Rhian Wilkinson and Sura Yekka; midfielders Kaylyn Kyle, Diana Matheson, Sophie Schmidt, Desiree Scott, Jessie Fleming, Ashley Lawrence and Brittany Baxter; and forwards Jonelle Filigno, Adriana Leon, Christine Sinclair and Josee Belanger. Hi Mr. Fraser, When I was watching the Heritage Classic in Vancouver there was a play midway through the third where Ottawa crashed the Canucks net and it came off its moorings. Ecco Scarpe Offerta . -- Kenneth Faried made a turnaround hook shot over Draymond Green with a half-second remaining, and the Denver Nuggets made Golden State wait at least one more game to secure a playoff berth with a stunning 100-99 win over the Warriors on Thursday night. http://www.eccooutlet.it/. His absence against the Celtics comes a day after he scored 43 points in the Heats 100-96 win at Cleveland. Ecco Scarpe Outlet . With the suspension, Nigeria is unable to take part in any kind of international fixtures. FIFA had issued a warning to the NFF last week after the federation was served with court proceedings from the government that prevented the NFFs president from running the NFFs day-to-day affairs. Ecco Scontate Outlet . According to the sportsbook BoDog, the Stampeders are 8/5 favourites to take home the Grey Cup at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on November 24.AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - LeBron James came leaping in to try to stop Jodie Meeks as the Detroit guard drove to the basket during the final seconds of the third quarter. After colliding with Meeks, James put his hands out to break his fall before sliding across the floor on his stomach.I was scared, because I broke my wrist on a fall like that in high school, James said. I was either going to land on my face or break the fall with my hands, but when I hit, both my arms went numb. Im OK now — it was just something like a stinger — but I wasnt sure at first.James barely missed any game time after that anxious moment, and he finished with 32 points to help the Cleveland Cavaliers to their seventh straight victory Tuesday night, 103-95 over the Pistons. Kyrie Irving matched his season high with 38 points. The Cavs never trailed in the second half, but when James hit the deck and didnt immediately get up, that was plenty to be concerned about. That is obviously a time of worry, which is the understatement of the year, Cleveland coach David Blatt said. In a situation like that, you are just hoping he is OK.James quickly came back in the game, and his two-handed breakaway dunk early in the fourth put Cleveland up 80-68.Greg Monroe had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who pulled within eight and had the ball late in the fourth quarter, but Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was unable to connect from 3-point range. James drew a foul at the other end and made both free throws to make it 88-78 with 2:56 to play.Caldwell-Pope was fouled by James while shooting a 3-pointer with 2:00 remaining, and that trio of free throws made it 90-83. The Pistons got the ball back, but Andre Drummond missed a layup, and Irving connected from beyond the arc.The Cavs avenged a 23-point home loss to Detroit late last month. That game was part of a seven-game winning streak for the Pistons, but now Detroit is struggling to overcome the loss of Brandon Jennings, who ruptured his left Achilles tendon last weekend and will miss the rest of the season.ddddddddddddIRVINGS BIG NIGHTDetroit led 19-17 after a first quarter in which the teams combined to shoot 1 for 16 from outside the paint. Cleveland shrugged off that rough start and reached 100 points for the eighth straight game.Irving was 6 of 10 from 3-point range. The rest of the Cavs went 3 of 24.Thats the luxury of playing with a great player like LeBron. When hes on the floor, you know there are going to be things opened up for the rest of you, Irving said. Tonight, we had a lot of open shots, and we got enough of them to go down.UNDERMANNEDD.J. Augustin, Detroits starting point guard now in Jennings absence, had 19 points and nine assists, but the Pistons have lost three in a row. That skid began with the game at Milwaukee when Jennings got hurt, but coach Stan Van Gundy says the team needs to move forward without him.Weve got good enough players to win, Van Gundy said. We had good enough players in there tonight to win. We just needed to do a couple of things better, and were not going to come in here after every loss now and talk about Brandons effect on it — at least Im not.Cleveland outscored Detroit 50-48 in the paint. Drummond had 12 points and 17 rebounds but shot just 6 of 17.TIP-INSCavaliers: Cleveland had won its last four games by double digits before Tuesday. ... The Cavs are without big man Anderson Varejao, who like Jennings ruptured his left Achilles tendon.Pistons: Detroit had 18 turnovers while Cleveland committed only nine.UP NEXTCavaliers: Host Portland on Wednesday night.Pistons: Play at Philadelphia on Wednesday night. First, Ivan Nova decided to have season-ending Tommy John elbow surgery. Then Michael Pineda was suspended for 10 games for using pine tar. After those developments were announced Thursday, Sabathia went out and threw six solid innings in his second straight strong start and New York beat the sloppy Boston Red Sox 14-5. "Hes taken the mindset since spring training he needs to be the ace of this staff," Yankees catcher Brian McCann said. "He gave us a great outing." He had plenty of help from both teams. Yangervis Solarte drove in four runs, Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits and three RBIs and Mark Teixeira hit his first homer of the season. Bostons contributions included five errors, 12 walks -- five by knuckleball throwing utilityman Mike Carp in the ninth -- three wild pitches and a passed ball. The Red Sox also allowed three stolen bases, all in the third inning. "The sooner we move past this one the better," Boston manager John Farrell said. Sabathia (3-2) struck out eight while allowing two runs on three hits in six innings as the Yankees rebounded from a 5-1 loss Wednesday night in which Pineda was ejected in the second inning for having pine tar on his neck. "It felt good to get a win. I just wanted to have a good outing," Sabathia said. "I know our bullpen has been taxed." After allowing at least four runs in each of his first starts, he rebounded with a one-run, seven-inning performance at Tampa Bay a week before facing Boston. "CC can be a guy to get on some rolls," New York manager Joe Girardi said. The costliest stretch for the Red Sox was the first three innings when they fell behind 7-0. They made four errors, allowed three stolen bases and had a wild pitch and passed ball. "Every team goes through slumps hitting, goes through slumps defensively," Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts said. "Its part of the game. Were definitely going to get better. Thats not the kind of team that we are." Felix Doubront (1-3) retired the first two batters of the game before Carlos Beltran reached on an error by Bogaerts and scored on a double by Alfonso Soriano. The Yankees added three runs in the second. Brett Gardner led off with a walk before second baseman Dustin Pedroia dropped third baseman Brock Holts throw for an error, allowing Brian Roberts to reach first.dddddddddddd. Solarte then doubled in two runs, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Teixeira started the three-run third with his homer before Gardner reached on Doubronts error. Gardner stole second and third and scored on Brian Roberts single. Roberts stole second then made it 7-0 when Ellsburys single drove him in. Ellsbury took second on centre fielder Jackie Bradley Jr.s error but was stranded. Boston cut the lead to 7-2 in the third on a sacrifice fly by David Ortiz and an RBI double by Johnny Gomes. New York added five runs in the seventh when all nine batters against Craig Breslow reached base, including Beltran on a forceout at second. Solarte and Derek Jeter had two-run singles and Ellsbury doubled in a run. Boston cut the lead to 12-5 in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a double by Bogaerts, a sacrifice fly and a passed ball by McCann.   after spending the last three seasons

Husain Abdullah says the risk of suffering further concussions is behind his decision to retire from the NFL at the age of 30. The safety was a free agent, after spending the last three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, but revealed he would not be seeking a new team because of the five concussions he suffered in his seven years in the league.Earlier this month, a top NFL health and safety official acknowledged for the first time a link between football-related concussions and the degenerative brain condition known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in testimony at a US congressional hearing. There are numerous deciding factors in my decision, with personal health being foremost, Abdullah wrote on Instagram.Sitting for five weeks last year after suffering the fifth concussion of my career, I had a lot to contemplate. My goals moving forward are to be of benefit to my family, my community, my country and hopefully the world.Having a sound mind will be vital in accomplishing these goals.I would like to thank the Minnesota Vikings for giving me an opportunity to make the team after going undrafted in 2008.The Kansas City Chiefs will forever have a special place in my heart. After sitting out of football to fulfil my Hajj Pilgrimage in 2012, the Chiefs were the first to call. The three years I spent playing for KC may have been the most enjoyable football experience in my entire life. Thank you. "I just want the playoffs to start," he said in a moment of refreshing truthfulness. Hes not alone. He cant be. They can see the light at the end of the tunnel, a tunnel that has led to darkness so many times before for the bulk of this Toronto roster. On Wednesday they moved one step closer. "That was a character test for us," Dwane Casey said after his teams bounce-back 99-90 win in Boston. "I think this team has a lot of character. I get upset with them but theyre mine, just like youre kids. They compete hard and they make mistakes but its not from a lack of fight or togetherness." It was their first victory in Beantown since 2008, the last season in which they qualified for the playoffs. Now, theyre on the cusp of returning to the postseason, and theyre in the drivers seat. The Raptors are just one win, or Knicks loss, away from clinching their first postseason berth in six years and can do so as early as Wednesday evening if the Kings defeat New York in Sacramento, a game Kyle Lowry says he wont watch but admits hell have to keep an eye on. "I said that before the game, I said look, we can take care of our business tonight," Lowry told the assembled media after the win. "We cant count on anyone else but we can take care of our part. I aint going to lie; I think tonight everybodys rooting for that Western Conference team over there." Going into the game, the Raptors were in danger of dropping their second straight and five of their last seven, following Tuesdays botched comeback attempt in Cleveland. Even after getting off to a better start - scoring 31 points in the opening 12 minutes after totaling 33 in their last two first quarters - they looked like a team going through the motions at points in the middle of the game, exchanging the lead with a lackluster Celtics club. Then the sense of urgency kicked in. Lowry scored nine of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and the Raptors closed out a win they needed to have. "[Casey] challenged us," Lowry said. "He challenged us big time and I think we responded tonight." With a little help from the Bobcats, who defeated the surging Nets in overtime, the Raptors have a two-game cushion sitting stop the Atlantic Division, also moving into a virtual tie with the Bulls for the Easts third seed. Although theyre anxious, theres still work to be done and each game, regardless of opponent, is increasingly meaningful with playoff seeding at stake and things to shore up over the seasons final three weeks. "We cant afford to look ahead," Casey cautioned. "Weve got to take care of business. Weve got to continue to get better and improve and shape up some areas that we have thats leaking a little bit." Only five of the Raptors 15 players have appeared in a postseason game over the last three years. Only three on the roster have logged time in more than 20 playoff contests. The teams starters have a combined 24 games of playoff experience, all from Lowry and Amir Johnson, who havent been to the dance in five years. "Its tough just because guys havent been there before," Cassey told TSN.dddddddddddda. "Playoff runs are tough. Theres a mental toughness, a physical toughness you have to have. Fight through injuries, little nicks and bangs that we have. You cant feel sorry for yourself because its a marathon. Youve got to be able to do that. This is the first time for some of our guys so its a new frontier for them." Many of them are heading into unchartered waters. Its only natural to fixate on the final destination but theyve come too far to lose focus now. "I think its kind of human nature," said Landry Fields, who started eight playoff games for the Knicks in his first two NBA season. "We see the playoffs and theres a pretty high probability that well get in but at the end of the day you cant really focus on that. These last few games are important, not just for us growing and building and getting momentum for the playoffs but also seeding. Seeding is huge in the playoffs and I think as long as we keep that as a focal point rather than thinking these games are just filler games until we get into the playoffs than theyll become more meaningful for us." "Were going to finish it off strong," echoed DeMar DeRozan, who scored 20 on Wednesday and will be making his playoff debut next month. "Weve worked too hard to just to get complacent with where were at. Weve still got a long ways to go and everybody in this locker room loves the game too much to sit back and say, were going to wait until the playoffs." Big night for the sophomores Both Terrence Ross and Jonas Valanciunas stepped up in Wednesdays win. Ross led Toronto with 24 points, hitting five of his nine attempts from three-point range, while Valanciunas registered his team-leading 20th double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. "I thought Jonas had one of his better nights, not only scoring but he rebounded," Casey said. "[Ross] kept us afloat. He knocked down some shots. We needed it." Struggling second unit The Raptors second unit - still without injured forward Patrick Patterson - mustered only seven points, all from Greivis Vasquez, who made just three of his 10 shots. Meanwhile, the Celtics bench scored 51, led by Jared Sullingers 26, 19 of which came in the fourth. "Again, point production from our bench has been an issue," Casey said. "Thats something we have to rectify. Thats just putting too many minutes on our starters." Toronto bench has now been outscored by a total of 129 points in 11 games without Patterson, who was cleared for contact earlier this week.   Reading on Tuesday night sent Karankas
Posted by: Dogcat250 - Today, 06:01 AM - Forum: Ban Apeal - No Replies

Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Clayton has told the FL72 Podcast the bust-up between Aitor Karanka and his players that threatened to sink their season has instead galavanised their promotion challenge. Adam Forshaws injury-time winner against Reading on Tuesday night sent Karankas side to the Championship summit, two points clear of second-placed Burnley with five games left to play.It is just a month since Karanka appeared on the brink of quitting the Riverside after he walked out of a team meeting, but he stayed on and has since guided the club to five consecutive wins. Middlesbrough travel to relegated Bolton on Saturday, which is live on Sky Sports 1, and Burnley on Tuesday knowing two wins will put them within touching distance of the Premier League, and Clayton says morale is sky high. FL72 Podcast - Clayton, Parkinson, Wilder It was a testing period but it brought everyone closer and made us realise we all want the same things; the fans, the players, the staff, Clayton told FL72 Podcast. If anything it settled the ship down and got us all going again knowing that we have got to do it for ourselves. Its been a good thing in the end to just regalvanise the players. Highlights of the Championship match between Middlesbrough and Reading There has never been an issue with the manager and the team, [the relationship] has always been very good. There is even more togetherness, knowing that we all want exactly the same thing. We are all trying to fight for the same thing and it showing in the performances.Clayton, who joined Middlesbrough from Huddersfield in August 2014, revealed his admiration for his managers intense drive and desire to win. There is not a stone unturned on his part and he expects the same when you go on the pitch, Clayton said. He is one of the best in terms of game preparation, and he expects the same from his players. After Saturdays trip to Bolton, Middlesbrough face second-placed Burnley on Tuesday night, a potentially pivotal night in the Championship race. Readings players let their frustrations boil over as Danny Williams appears to confront his captain Paul McShane during their defeat to Middlesbrough Are we feeling more anxious? Not particularly, no, Clayton said. The amount of drama that has gone on at our club this season, we feel like we are back in a routine. During the middle of the season it felt routine, winning games. It felt like we could go out and play well. It feels a bit more like that at the moment.Clayton said his side cannot afford to take their eye off the ball against Bolton, despite the fact the Trotters were relegated on Saturday after their 4-1 defeat against Derby County. We know the importance of this game and we know we cant expect three points, Clayton added. You have to be careful, but we wont be complacent. We have not done so well when it looks like it should be a guaranteed three points. You could easily lose a game and its right back against you. If we get three points on Saturday we can focus on Tuesday. It was a testing period but it brought everyone closer and made us realise we all want the same things; the fans, the players, the staff. Clayton on Karanka On the Burnley game, Clayton added: It wont decide anything but it will go to making a large dent in their team if we can win it. Both teams will properly be up for that one. Hopefully it will keep falling on our side and we can just get over the line. Thats all that matters at this time; just getting over the line. Some 1,500 subway workers in Sao Paulo voted against going back on strike in a pay dispute. They had suspended the walkout Monday amid a popular backlash and government pressure to end the transportation chaos in Brazils biggest city. "We thought that right now its better to wait," union president Altino Prazeres said, but added that he wouldnt rule out resuming the strike sometime during the monthlong soccer tournament. "We get the feeling that maybe we arent as prepared for a full confrontation with police on the day the World Cup starts." The union said its members would hold a march Thursday morning demanding that 42 workers fired during the five-day work stoppage are rehired. World Cup organizers are counting on Sao Paulos subway system to carry tens of thousands of fans Thursday to Itaquerao stadium, where Brazil will play Croatia in the tournaments first game far from the hotel areas where most tourists are staying. Even as tensions eased in Sao Paulo, labour conflicts heated up in Rio, where fans were arriving ahead of Sundays match between Argentina and Bosnia-Herzegovina. On Wednesday, check-in counter clerks, baggage handlers and janitorial staff who have been demanding raises of at least 5.6 per cent for several months voted to strike starting at midnight. The work stoppage will affect thee citys Galeao international airport as well as the Santos Dumont airport that connects Rio to other Brazilian destinations A union representative said only 20 per cent of workers would stay off the job for 24 hours, abiding by a labour court order that threatened to fine unions more than $22,000 if staffing fell below 80 per cent of normal levels.dddddddddddd The official agreed to discuss specifics of the walkout only if not quoted by name because he wasnt authorized to speak publicly. The airport workers strike is the latest unrest to hit Brazil as workers battered by several years of high inflation take advantage of the spotlight from the World Cup to pressure for pay raises from employers and the government. In the northern city of Natal, where the United States plays its first game Monday against Ghana, bus drivers will stay home Thursday for at least 24 hours to press their demands for a 16 per cent pay increase. Teachers remain on strike in Rio and routinely block streets with rallies, and subway workers in that city briefly threatened a walkout. Police in several cities have also gone on strike in recent weeks, but are back at work now. There also has been a steady drumbeat of anti-government protests across Brazil criticizing the billions spent on hosting the World Cup and demanding improvements in public services. The protests that began last year have diminished in size but not in frequency, and they also have disrupted traffic at times. ------ Associated Press writers Stan Lehman in Sao Paulo and Bradley Brooks in Rio de Janeiro contributed to this report.   pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Austin Daye posted 22 points in a rare spot start, helping the San Antonio Spurs take down the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-93 on Saturday. Daye shot 8-for-13 and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in his second start of the season to lead six Spurs in double figures. Patty Mills gave 19 points off the bench and Tim Duncan shot 5-for-6 for 13 points in limited minutes. We needed someone to step up...and we got a great boost from (Daye), Duncan said. He played with a lot of confidence. Tony Parker and Cory Joseph netted 12 points apiece and Boris Diaw had 11 for San Antonio, which was without Kawhi Leonard (hand) for the 13th straight game. Manu Ginobili also sat out with a back injury after playing just 10 minutes in Fridays win over Phoenix. The Spurs have won four of their last five games, but are just 8-8 without Leonard this season. Zach LaVine paced Minnesota with 19 points off the bench, while Andrew Wiggins and Gorgui Dieng finished with 18 apiece. The Wolves made all 26 of their free throws to set a franchise record for most makes without a miss from the line. Wiggins has scored in double figures in 10 straight, though the Timberwolves have lost 15 in a row since beating Portland on Dec. 10. Daye scored five in a row at the back end of an 11-0 run towards the end of the first quarter. Joseph then drew a foul just before the horn, with his free throws giving the Spurs a 27-18 lead after one. They won the next two quarters by a combined 11 points to take a 20-point lead into the fourth. Minnesota got within 13 points midway through the fourth and had two opportunities to cut its deficit to 10, but Robbie Hummel and Troy Daniels missed 3s on consecutive possessions. LaVines three-point play made it 100-89 with 2:04 remaining, but it was too late for Minnesota to mount a comeback. They were just a better team, Dieng said of the Spurs. "I dont know that were close," said general manager Alex Anthopoulos. "I just think, right now, the acquisition cost just doesnt work for us right now. I dont know if I can quantify how far off or things like that that they might be but I would say we continue to have dialogue. So if you want to, look at that as encouraging." While young pitching prospects Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman continue to be in high demand – Anthopoulos isnt opposed to moving either if the deal is right – its the Jays big bats that are attracting the most attention. "The one thing we have on this team is power," said Anthopoulos. "Theres not a lot of power out there on the market or the free agent prices dont work for some of the clubs so weve been approached by clubs asking for some of our position players that have power." Anthopoulos then moved quickly to deny a Toronto Sun report that Colby Rasmus had been offered to two teams in the search for starting pitching. "With respect to rumours and some of our position players, I would say just to kind of bury some of those. With all our players well be open-minded if people want to approach us but I can say as we sit here today I feel pretty confident that most, if not all, our position player core will be with the club to start the year," he said. The Blue Jays havent ruled out signing Rasmus to a long-term extension. The 26-year-old is coming off his best season since his breakout campaign in 2010 with the Cardinals. Limited by injury to 118 games, Rasmus authored a slash line of .276/.338/.501, and lifted his OPS to .840 from .689 the previous season. Anthopoulos is leaving the door open to a long-term extension with Rasmus, who will be a free agent for the first time after this season. In fact, only Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays starrting outfielders is signed beyond 2014.dddddddddddd Citing Edwin Encarnacion as a player given a long-term commitment in the middle of a breakout campaign, Anthopoulos said hes willing to wait on Rasmus in order to "gather more information," even if the centerfielder continues to perform at a high level and a deal becomes more costly. "We feel time is on our side in the sense of we dont feel the need to necessarily have to do it so early," said general manager Alex Anthopoulos. "Weve got more resources from a payroll standpoint." Jose Bautistas and Edwin Encarnacions team-friendly contracts – Bautista has two years left at $28 million with a club option for 2016 at $14 million while Encarnacion is signed for two more years at $19 million with a club option for 2016 at $10 million – make Rasmus a logical choice to be moved out of the group of power bats. Given this years offseason market for outfielders – Jacoby Ellsbury signed for $153 million over seven years with the Yankees and Shin-Soo Choo is expected to receive a similar figure in free agency – Anthopoulos has a difficult decision to make on Rasmus value. WEBER HEADS TO KOREA The Blue Jays will enter Thursday mornings Rule 5 draft with 39 players on their 40-man roster. Right-hander Thad Weber has been sold to NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization. MOTTOLA NEARING DEAL WITH RAYS Former Blue Jays hitting coach Chad Mottola and the Tampa Bay Rays are finalizing the paperwork on his contract to become the clubs new minor league hitting coordinator. Mottola served in the same capacity for the Blue Jays in 2009 before spending three seasons as the hitting coach at Triple-A Las Vegas. Mottola and Dwayne Murphy, who retired, are the two members of last seasons coaching staff that wont be returning to Toronto. Kevin Seitzer, who was the hitting coach in Kansas City when manager John Gibbons served as Royals bench coach, was hired last month to replace Mottola. ' ' '

  The Brazilian federation said Monday
Posted by: Dogcat250 - Today, 05:58 AM - Forum: Ban Apeal - No Replies

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil -- Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will have all of his top players available for the Confederations Cup semifinal against South American rival Uruguay on Wednesday. The Brazilian federation said Monday that defender David Luiz and defensive midfielder Paulinho will recover from injuries in time for the decisive match in Belo Horizonte. Paulinho missed the group stage match against Italy because of a left ankle sprain, while David Luiz was replaced in the first half because of a right leg injury. Brazil beat Italy 4-2 to win Group A and set up the matchup with the regional rivals. Italy will play World Cup champion Spain on Thursday. The hosts have won two consecutive Confederations Cups, and three overall. It hasnt won a significant competition since the 2009 title in South Africa. Paulinho, touted to move to Tottenham when the transfer window opens in July, injured his ankle in Brazils second game in the World Cup warm-up competition, against Mexico. Doctors said he would have been able to play against Italy, but Brazil had already secured a place in the semifinals in advance and Scolari decided to keep him out so he could fully recover for the semifinal. Chelsea defender David Luiz had been doubtful to start against Italy after breaking his nose against the Mexicans, but the injury didnt keep him from playing. What kept him from finishing the match was a bruised right leg sustained early in the game. He had to leave the field before halftime and the injury was still bothering him on Sunday. Reserve striker Bernard injured his right foot in the teams first training session ahead of the match at the Mineirao, but both David Luiz and Paulinho practiced regularly. They are considered key for the Brazilian defence when the team faces some of the tournaments top strikers in Diego Forlan, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez. "They are all very good strikers, they can be decisive," Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar said on Monday. "We will need all the help we can get because we will be playing against a very strong attack. We will have to be very careful because they can decide the match in the blink of an eye." The Brazilian defence did well in the opener against Japan and in the second match against Mexico, keeping their attackers at bay and not conceding any goals. But without Paulinho and David Luiz against Italys attack led by Mario Balotelli, the Brazilians conceded two goals. Brazil hadnt conceded goals in three straight matches, including in the friendly against France just before the Confederations Cup. "We let in the goals at the right time, they didnt matter much in the end," Julio Cesar said. "We have improved a lot in defence but we know that we still havent found the right balance. We have to keep working hard to improve in that area as well as in others." Uruguay is the defending South American champion but Brazil has won the last two times the teams faced each other, both in World Cup qualifiers in 2010. WENGEN, Switzerland -- Erik Guay was fastest in World Cup downhill training yet again Thursday. The Canadian racer extended his streak of winning a training run at each downhill venue this season, timing 2 minutes, 36.14 seconds on the 4.42-kilometre (2.75-mile) Lauberhorn. "I feel like my training runs have been very consistent since the start. Now Im slowly translating those fast speeds into race days," said Guay, who won last month in Val Gardena, Italy. Matthias Mayer of Austria was second, 0.11 behind, and Kjetil Jansrud of Norway was third, 0.31 behind. "Its not often Ive been fast in Wengen and Ill take this," Jansrud said. Guay, the 2011 world downhill champion from Mont-Tremblant, Que., is among several contenders who have found success elusive at the storied Swiss venue. Neither he nor Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, whoo leads the World Cup downhill standings ahead of Guay, has ever finished on the podium in Wengen.dddddddddddd Svindal, the 2010 Olympic silver medallist in downhill, was ninth Thursday, trailing by 1.18 seconds. Bode Miller of the United States, a two-time Lauberhorn winner, was 10th, 1.67 behind, and Carlo Janka, the 2010 winner from Switzerland, was 13th despite a bib number of 39. Manuel Osborne-Paradis of North Vancouver, B.C., was tied for 21st, Robbie Dixon of Whistler, B.C., was 39th and Jeffrey Frisch of Mont-Tremblant was 54th. Ben Thomsen of Invermere, B.C., was 58th, Conrad Pridy was 64th and Morgan Pridy, also from Whistler, was 84th.   Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan
Posted by: Dogcat250 - Today, 05:55 AM - Forum: Ban Apeal - No Replies

Moving swiftly to give Alex Ovechkin help at the defensive end while raiding a rival, new Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan signed Pittsburgh Penguins free agents Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik on Tuesday to deals totalling more than $65 million. The 27-year-old Niskanen, the more offensive-minded of the pair of defencemen joining the Capitals, got a $40.25 million, seven-year contract. "Its a very big commitment from Washington. Thats no small thing. Youre talking a seven-year commitment for a very substantial amount of money," said Niskanen, who got married Saturday. "Im excited for that challenge." The 33-year-old Orpik, more of a stay-at-home blueliner who had spent his entire career with the Penguins, was given a $27.5 million, five-year package. "Ive got to be honest: Up until this year, I never really envisioned myself leaving Pittsburgh. As everyone knows, theres been a lot of changes there. It really was a perfect time," Orpik said. "The past year, there was such strong expectations for the team, both internally and externally, and I think we had a really tough time handling those expectations." The Capitals got off to a fast start on the first day of NHL free agency, also adding Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Justin Peters on a $1.9 million, two-year deal, while re-signing centre Michael Latta to a $1.15 million, two-year contract. Last season, three-time NHL MVP Ovechkin and the Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years, leading ownership to make changes. George McPhees contract was not renewed after he spent 17 seasons as the teams GM, while Adam Oates was fired with a year left on his three-season deal. MacLellan was promoted from assistant general manager to replace McPhee, while Barry Trotz was hired as the new coach. Washington also has added assistant coach Todd Reirden, who was hired by the Capitals after the Penguins fired him last week. "Hes been huge," Niskanen said. "Todd helps young defencemen get better." And in one more Penguins-to-Capitals transaction Tuesday, Washington signed right wing Chris Conner to a one-year, two-way contract. He has 22 goals and 28 assists in 178 NHL games, including 19 with Pittsburgh last season. As for all those people moving from Pittsburgh — which also recently changed its GM and coach — to Washington, Niskanen said: "It would seem odd, wouldnt it? But its professional sports. ... If the Caps call, youve got to listen." Speaking about the Capitals, Orpik said: "Ive played against that group enough to know what the potential of that group can be. ... I think they needed some direction, and I think Barry will provide that." Niskanen, 27, led NHL defencemen with a plus-33 rating last season, when he set career highs with 10 goals and 36 assists. The 6-foot, 209-pound defenceman has 35 goals, 132 assists and 266 penalty minutes in 491 career NHL games for Pittsburgh and Dallas. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound Orpik has 13 goals, 119 assists and 734 penalty minutes in 703 career games. He is a two-time U.S. Olympian and was an alternate captain for the Penguins since 2008. The 27-year-old Peters went 7-9-4 with a 2.50 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage for the Carolina Hurricanes last season. "When the head coach on the team looks you in the eye and tell you he wants you to be there, that goes a long way," Peters said. He said that he wasnt told how hell be used with the Capitals — strictly as a No. 2 behind Braden Holtby, or splitting time in the top goalie spot — but added that he thinks it will "work itself out." ___ AP Sports Writer Joseph White contributed to this report. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Milos Raonic emerged as the only Canadian winner at the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday after the fifth seed defeated American Robby Ginepri to advance to the third round. Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., beat Ginepri in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., meanwhile, suffered another hard-court disappointment in losing to Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Earlier, Vancouvers Vasek Pospisil pushed Roger Federer to a third set before falling to the tournaments second seed. Raonic says he was pleased with his performance, but is looking for improvement. "I felt great after the first match of the week," said the Wimbledon semifinalist. "These were much different conditions than last week at the Rogers Cup. "But I came up with the right mentality and was able to execute well. I wasnt particularly nervous. I knew how Id prepared and what to expect. I was able to break right away and that made things go well form the beginning." Bouchard played in her first tournament since Wimbledon last week, losing her first match at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. She said Kuznetsova was a "tough opponent." "I think Svetlana was pretty solid," she said. "For me, you know, its still a work in progress." She said the time off did contribute to the result. "With all the time I took off and everything it would kind of be a long journey back to get back to where I was and to get better than that," she said. "But I feel better this week than last week, so thats a positive. Its all about moving forward." Federer, third in the ATP world rankings, is coming off an appearance in the finals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Federer lost that match to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Swiss tennis star beat Pospisil 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-2 in the second-round match on centre court to become the only man to reach 300 wins at the Masters 1000 level in mens singles. Pospisil beat Radek Stepanek in the first round in Cincinnati a week after losing his opening match at the Rogers Cup. He had 33 winners and 37 unforced errors against Federer. Pospisil played tough against Federer, forcing a tiebreaker that he ultimately lost on a forehand error. Pospisil secured the second set when Federer missed on a forehand cross-court. The third set was all Federer, with Pospisil broken twice on the way to the loss. "Any time you play Roger, there is always extra tension," said Pospisil. "Ive always looked up to him so much. I was tense in the first set and that claimed a lot of energy. "In the second I played better but in the third a couple of points made the difference." Pospisil also pointed to his heavy playing schedule at Cincinnati as a problem. "I had heavy legs at that point, maybe I was paying the price for the first set," he said. "I had five sets form singles and doubles the day before. "I was missing some pop in my serve and he played well when he needed to." Discount Soccer Jerseys .
